Focuses on an understanding of mathematical concepts. Uses clear explanations, lots of visual exercises and pattern exercises. Mastery-oriented: concentrates fairly long on a topic, with fairly few topics per grade.  Emphasizes mental math and developing number sense. Very little preparation needed.  Learn More

Needs: Semester One – Worktext 5A,  Semester Two- Worktext 5B

Notes: A great curriculum that covers all skills really well.   Crammed full of information so page layout can seem a little overwhelming.  No color.  A great fit for the student that gets Math. 2 workbooks A & B.  Placement Test

Notes:  Math-U-See is great for hands on learners.  It can be quite repetitive and doesn’t contain many reviews.  Placement Test

The students are provided with the necessary learning experiences beginning with the concrete and pictorial stages, followed by the abstract stage to enable them to learn mathematics meaningfully. This approach encourages active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem-solving. This helps develop the foundation students will need for more advanced mathematics. Practice exercises are designed to provide the students with further practice after they have done the relevant workbook exercises. Review exercises are provided for cumulative reviews of concepts and skills. All the practice exercises and review exercises are optional exercises. Learn More

Needs: Semester One – Workbook A, Textbook A, Home Instructor Guide A.  Semester two – Workbook B, Textbook B, Home Instructor Guide B.

Notes: This level isn’t a complete curriculum and will need supplementation. Colorful kid-friendly pages.  Placement Test

Mathematical Reasoning™ Level F is a complete curriculum for the fifth-grade level that teaches the mathematical concepts and skills students are expected to know.  This book also introduces several skills and concepts normally taught in the next grade level.  Mathematical Reasoning™ books help students devise strategies to solve a wide variety of math problems. These highly effective activities use step-by-step, discussion-based problem solving and computation to build the math reasoning skills necessary for success in higher-level math and math assessments.  This book is written to the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  Activities and units spiral slowly, allowing students to become comfortable with concepts but also challenging them to continue building their math skills.  Learn More

Notes: Colorful pages self-directed.

Saxon Math Homeschool 7/6 teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes the incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts.

Building upon the principles taught in Saxon Math 6/7, the Saxon 76 textbook introduces functions and coordinates graphing, integers, exponential expressions, and prime factorization. Students will specifically learn about the order of operations, number lines, decimal place value, how to find the percent of a number, how to round decimal numbers, attributes of geometric solids, and more.

Lessons contain a warm-up (with facts practice, mental math, & problem-solving exercises); introduction to the new concept, lesson practice exercises where the new skill is practiced, and mixed practice exercises, which includes 25-30 old and new problems. In-depth “Investigations” are provided every 10 lessons and have their own set of questions.

The Tests and Worksheets book provides supplemental “facts practice” tests for each lesson, as well as 23 cumulative tests that cover every 5-10 lessons. The included “activity sheets” are designed to be used with the activities given in the student worktext. Five optional, reproducible, recording forms are also included.

The Solutions Manual provides answers for all problems in the lesson (including warm-up, lesson practice, and mixed practice exercises), as well as solutions for the supplemental practice found in the back of the student text. It also includes answers for the facts practice tests, activity sheets, and tests in the separate tests & worksheets book. Learn More

Needs: Student Text, Solutions Manual, Tests & Worksheets.

Notes: Saxon Math has a very dry presentation.  The pages are devoid of color, but it has lots of reviews and is a well-respected curriculum.  Placement Test

Designed specifically for homeschoolers, Teaching Textbooks 7 is designed for independent students, with the “teacher” and “textbook” elements combined. The textbook offers detailed instructions, fun illustrations, real-world examples, extensive review and already highlighted important concepts; and if your student gets stuck, there’s always the audiovisual step-by-step solutions for every one of the homework problems and quizzes! Students will listen to the lectures that explain new concepts, read the summary in the workbook, work each problem, effectually be using all learning styles; or you can mix and match to suit your own personal needs. The CD-ROMs also include automatic grading and feedback on every problem (great for time-stressed parents!) and animated lectures with lots of real world applications. There are even audio hints for some of the tougher problems! Fun, applicable and made just for you, the homeschooler!

Math 7 covers basic arithmetic problems as well as geometry. Chapters include adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing and using whole numbers in the real world; fractions; decimals; percents; geometric measurements; graphing and more. Learn More

ST Math

K-8th Grade

Over the course of a school year, students solve well over 5,000 interactive puzzles, each one providing animated feedback that adapts to a student’s response. This informative feedback offers an intrinsically motivating learning experience that shows students the mathematical consequences of each answer.

Students experience autonomy in ST Math, where action is critical and mistakes are the perfect opportunity for learning.

Math concepts are first presented without the use of language and symbols, enabling all students to access the critical thinking and visual problem solving at the heart of mathematics. Symbols are gradually introduced as the puzzles progress, so that by the end of the learning path students are solving the same math problems they would encounter in a textbook or on a standardized test. Through this process, students develop conceptual understanding of abstract symbols and procedures
